Treating for Termites

The termites have shown no sign of letting up yet as we’ve been seeing  steady swarms for the last month.  Here we are applying  termiticide to a trench next to an infested wall.  We create a chemical barrier between the termites and the structure to eliminate them and keep them out.

Termites love wood.  This goes without saying.  However, what most people don’t realize is that termites will eat almost anything that contains cellulose.  This means paper of all types and cardboard products are fair game as well.  Termites actually prefer cardboard and paper many times because of the fact that it’s easier to consume and digest than your average 2×4 stud.  It’s basically like pre-digested wood.  It is for this reason that termites are a problem in all structures and not just those with wooden siding or wooden frames.  The structure of a home is obviously extremely important however its not the only thing that can be damaged by a termite infestation.  Paper documents stored in boxes, wall hangings, paintings, pictures, and wood furniture are all common targets of secondary termite attack.  So even if a building has a steel frame it still needs to be inspected regularly for termite infestation.  Also if you know you have a termite infestation in your home you should make sure to remove any cellulose containing items from the immediate infested area if possible.
